In my work with individual clients as well as organizational clients, I spend a lot of time talking about and supporting their exploration of values. I recommend that we review values on a regular basis and “check in” with ourselves and our organizations.

Last week, I decided to do this for myself. In the past, I’ve noticed that I sometime choose new values or the values stay the same but the order of importance or their meaning changes for me. Since 2019, I have focused on the values of gratitude, hopefulness and resilience. The value cards are on my bulletin board right above my computer screen so I look at them – literally – every single day. This year, I took them down and realized that I needed to place hopefulness at the top of the list as it is the value I find myself struggling with a bit more these days. I want to look at it first thing in the morning and throughout the day believing that something greatly desired will occur and that the quote below will be true – if not this year, then the next.
Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering, “It will be happier.”
– Alfred Lord Tennyson
